Oprah: Says in NBC News: Miss Philippines Should Have Won Miss Universe 2011

Oprah: One of the world's most powerful women says the Miss Universe 2011 title should have gone to Miss Philippines, and not to Miss Angola.

In a statement made for NBC news, Oprah Winfrey openly declared what she thought about the winners of Monday night's Miss Universe 2011 pageant. The coveted crown went to Leila Lopes of Angola, whose features and personality secured the title for her, but Oprah Winfrey thinks Shamcey Supsup from the Philippines should have won.

"I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Miss Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice." says Winfrey in her statement.

Winfrey said Miss Philippines showed the intelligence of a global "beauty and brains" type because of her straightforward answer to the final question.

"The rest had their interpreters and having breaks on seconds to think about their answers. Hands down, Miss Philippines answered straight to the point," said Winfrey.

Shamcey Supsup from General Santos City, Philippines, won over the hearts of judges with her striking features, slender physique, and brilliant mind from the pre-pageant down to the last moments of the show. Hollywood actress Vivica A. Fox was the one who handed Miss Philippines the question, "Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person you love? Why or why not?"

"If I had to change my religious beliefs, I will not marry the person that I love. Because the first person that I love is God who created me."

"And I have my faith and my principles, these are what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God too, Thank you," answered Miss Philippines.

Miss Philippines ended being the 3rd Runner up, following Miss Brazil (2nd), Miss Ukraine (1st), and Miss Angola who won the title.

Commentaries and Twits

Angola's Leila Lopes was crowned the new Miss Universe, edging out beauties from Ukraine, Brazil, the Philippines and China as the pageant marked its 60th anniversary in Sao Paolo Brazil.

Among top 5 finalist candidate, only the candidate of the Philippines Ms. Shamcey could speak English edging tongues from Angola, Ukraine, Brazil and China.

From the word Universe alone it means you are universal but how comes the crowned could not speak English and keep relying on the interpreter? What will happen if that crowned Miss – Not Universe will lose in the midst of the dessert and she could not speak English as universal language, how could she save herself?

The Miss Universe 2011 in Sao Paolo Brazil is covered with question of their criteria in judging and in choosing a “Miss Universe”

How could a judges impressed to a candidate who speaks language which is not understood by the universe? Is it favoritism as they have the same language? Or they used the same language to understand each other?

The interpreter is not the candidate so why should rely on the interpreter? She must defend herself if she face for the fight and not to defend her chaperon to answer the question.

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup, a 25-year-old architect and board topnotcher from General Santos City, was named third runner-up.

Twits

While some were disappointed, as they expected Supsup to fare better, most still thought she did a terrific job.

A former Miss Universe first runner-up, Miriam Quiambao (@miriamq), said, "I'm a bit disappointed. But Shamcey spoke from her truth and that's what's most important. The judges' votes are just an opinion."

"At the end of the day, we know that Shamcey Supsup delivered the best answer of them all. She is still the Philippines' Miss Universe," said @DailyHappyMeal.

Ian Araneta (@ianaraneta23) of the Philippine Azkals expressed his frustration over the finish as well.

@Prince_Denison, Miss Universe 2011: Still Miss Shamcey Supsup - Philippines is the crowned Miss Universe as the world could understand her than the other 4

"Pwede ba sabihin nyo sa akin kung ano ang criteria for judging and katangian para manalo sa Miss U na wala c Shamcey...Sige nga?!! (Can anyone tell me what criteria for judging and winning the Miss Universe that Shamcey lacked?)"

But for @hecklerforever, having a better finish than China was the best thing that happened in that pageant. "China, 5th. Philippines, 4th. Take that, HU Jintao!"
